An AC (Air Conditioning) Engineer is a skilled professional responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning systems. These engineers typically work in various settings, including residential, commercial, and industrial environments.

QUALIFICATIONS

There are no formal academic entry requirements although some employers may request GCSEs/S grades. Training is via an apprenticeship, or BTEC, City & Guilds or other specialised qualification.

TASKS

  • Install air conditioning units in new constructions or retrofit existing structures, ensuring proper sizing and placement..
  • Collaborate with clients, architects, and engineers to design and plan AC systems based on cooling requirements and building specifications..
  • Install and connect ductwork to ensure the proper distribution of conditioned air throughout the space..
  • Handle and manage refrigerants according to environmental regulations, including charging and recovering refrigerants..
  • Install and connect various components of AC systems, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, fans, and thermostats..
  • Connect and install electrical wiring for AC units, including controls, sensors, and power supplies..
  • Conduct testing and commissioning procedures to ensure the proper functioning of the AC system and adherence to design specifications..
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on AC systems to extend their lifespan and prevent potential issues..
  • Identify and diagnose problems in AC systems using diagnostic tools and equipment..
  • Repair or replace faulty components or systems, such as compressors, coils, fans, and refrigerant lines..
