Job Description

Working alongside the local reactive teams across the region, the Technical Manager will be an experienced civil expert accountable for the development and delivery of planned strategic solutions, which reduce pollution and flooding incidents.  A particular focus is required in catchments where groundwater infiltration/inundation is an issue, leading to increased tankering costs and customer complaints.

What you’ll be doing as a Technical Manager

The Technical Manager will also be responsible for managing a small team of up to 2 Field Engineers, delivering/overseeing flow management activities and infiltration investigations.  They will ensure that the team are trained and equipped to perform their duties safely, as well as ensure the team manages plant hire effectively.

Key responsibilities of the role include:
  • Use insight, including infiltration investigations, to develop a regional action plan for the Home Counties to target pollution and flooding hot spots.
  • Deliver Minor Capital Works programmes; gathering quotes and presenting the required solution to risk for funding approval. Overseeing works being delivered by contractors, issuing permits to work and ensuring good health safety practises.
  • Provide technical engineering support to the local teams, facilitating their continued personal development, as well as guidance when dealing with complex issues.
  • Line management and supervision of the field engineer team, ensuring the team is trained and equipped to perform their duties.
  • Work with Field Engineer and Logistics team to ensure flow management plans are fit for purpose and understood by the various stakeholders, whilst fostering excellent relationships and working practises amongst the teams and individuals.
  • Carry out Health and Safety audits of contractors, sites, and internal teams for compliance with the relevant standards and regulations. Reporting and resolving issues identified where appropriate. Operating under Thames Water’s Zero Compromise approach to H&S.

Base Location: Hybrid – base at a site in the Home Counties region - to be discussed with the successful candidate.

Working hours: 36 hours and to take part in the regional Out of Hours Co-ordinator rota. (approx. 1 in 6 weeks)

Requirements for the role: Full UK driving license

What you should bring to the role
  • Strong technical civils experience, ideally in Waste infrastructure.
  • Qualified to HND / FdEng or equivalent.
  • Skilled in finding cost-conscious solutions to complex network issues.
  • Good IT skills. (especially Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal.
  • Full driving license.
  • NEBOSH / IOSH: Strong knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and application. (desirable)
  • Knowledge of industry design standards for civil remediation and repair works. (desirable)
  • Ability to interrogate data via VISTEC and Sales Force. (desirable)
  • Experience in engaging and developing a team. (desirable)
