Job Description

Thames Water is looking for a Strategic System Optimisation Engineer.
Join us at the heart of the Water Systems Performance team and play a pivotal role in enhancing water services for our customers, communities, and the environment.  The role offers an exciting opportunity to work in a critical operational team, while engaging in fulfilling and diverse work.
  • 36 hours per week, Monday – Friday
  • Full time, Permanent role
What you will be doing as a Strategic System Optimisation Engineer
  • Develop the strategic water distribution system to enable greater performance and resilience from our critical assets. This includes consideration for health and safety, water quality, supply resilience, leakage, energy efficiency, and cost optimisation
  • Achieve operational and regulatory targets, while setting the strategic direction for your region
  • Create initiatives for managing the water system across the region, accounting for population growth and the influence of climate change
  • Recognised as a Subject Matter Expert in the source-to-tap operation of the strategic water distribution system
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to the System Optimisation team and support the training of other Thames Water colleagues
  • Drive improvements of defined business processes and lead innovative new ways of working
  • Enhance data-driven capabilities of our assets, so that critical business insights can be gained and acted upon
  • Facilitate engineering and customer-led improvement projects
  • Provide specialist technical support to the wider business in the management of unplanned emergency incidents. This includes Out of Hours Coordinator responsibilities on a technical standby roster
What you should bring to the role
  • Hold relevant education/ experience in the water industry or a suitable STEM discipline (or equivalent)
  • Have a competent IT skillset. Capable of using qualitative/ quantitative data to resolve problems and drive business performance
  • An excellent communicator who demonstrates strong leadership skills and an ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Comfortable working with tight deadlines and high-profile projects
  • Experience working with GIS mapping systems, SCADA telemetry, and standard corporate IT systems such as Microsoft 365 is preferred but not mandatory
  • Experience working in a project management/ continuous improvement environment
  • Experience with Civil Design and Construction techniques will be advantageous
  • Full driving licence and own transport are required, due to mandatory attendance at meetings spread across various Thames Water sites
