Job Description

Beddington Sewage Treatment Works (STW) is a fascinating site, not just for its critical role in wastewater treatment but also for its unique contributions to renewable energy and environmental stewardship.

At times, the site is self-sufficient, generating its renewable energy, and plays a vital role in sustaining the River Wandle, one of only 210 chalk streams in the world. This site represents a rare chance to contribute directly to the health of one of the most precious watercourses globally.

This is a great opportunity to shadow and learn from the current Performance Manager with 50 years of experience in wastewater treatment at Thames Water.

What you’ll be doing as a Performance Manager

As Controller of Premises for Beddington STW and the Farmlands, you’ll ensure health and safety while enhancing biodiversity in an area that will become South London’s largest green space. You’ll take accountability for Beddington STW’s overall performance, leading a multidisciplinary team of Process Technicians, ME&I Technicians, and Process Control Engineers (PCEs). Your responsibilities will include:
  • Leadership: Inspiring, coaching, and developing your team to create a diverse, inclusive, and high-performing workplace.
  • Health, Safety, and Wellbeing: Ensuring zero harm and fostering a culture of competence, safety, and wellbeing, with particular attention to biogas safety.
  • Environmental Impact: Enhancing the health of the River Wandle through exceptional environmental performance while maximizing renewable energy generation as part of Thames Water’s journey to Net Zero.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Strengthening relationships with customers, regulators, and community stakeholders to build trust and engagement.
  • Operational Excellence: Managing processes, budgets, and resources efficiently to meet and exceed financial targets, leveraging data and innovation to optimize operations.
  • Strategic Planning: Moving beyond the day-to-day to plan and implement long-term operational strategies for site improvements.
  • Out-of-Hours Leadership: Participating in an out-of-hours roster with the management team to maintain continuity and responsiveness.

Requirements for the role: Due to the nature of the role, a valid, UK driving licence is required.

What you should bring to the role
We’re looking for a passionate and experienced leader who brings:
  • People Management Skills: Prior experience managing operational teams, with a proven ability to inspire and engage employees to drive performance.
  • Environmental Passion: A genuine enthusiasm for environmental improvement and renewable energy initiatives.
  • Health and Safety Knowledge: A strong understanding of health and safety principles and practices. The role will see you become Controller of Premises (COP) for Beddington STW and Farmlands.
  • Financial Acumen: Experience managing budgets and driving cost efficiencies.
  • Strategic Thinking: The ability to prioritize and think beyond daily operations to deliver long-term site goals.
  • Collaboration: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to foster collaboration across departments and with external stakeholders.
  • Practical Experience: Knowledge of production processes and operational strategy, with a structured, proactive approach.
  • Driving Licence: A valid UK driving licence is essential for this role.
