Job Description

We are looking for individuals who are passionate about developing their knowledge and experience within Regulation, Risk & Compliance, with the chance to embark on a rewarding career path. Working alongside the Chief Risk and Compliance Officer and his team, you’ll have the opportunity to work across several ‘seats’ within the Risk and Compliance teams to support the delivery of best practice risk and compliance management. You’ll work with colleagues from across Thames Water in making risk-informed decisions to protect our assets, reputation and the sustainability of Thames Water.

As part of your role, you’ll help provide teams across Thames Water with a clear, accurate and current view of the risk profile of the organisation and associated mitigation and control strategies. You’ll contribute to the development of key external reports on risk and compliance and other statutory or disclosable obligations.

You’ll also work to protect the long-term interests of the business and its customers by helping the business understand, manage and mitigate key compliance risks and engage with the business so that obligations and policies are understood and support monitoring and reporting of our compliance with our obligations.

Working with the Head of Business Resilience you’ll have the opportunity to help improve the resilience of the organisation through the delivery and maintenance of a crisis management capability, corporate business continuity and horizon scanning processes to identify emerging risks. You’ll also work with the Head of Business Integrity in maintaining the highest standards of ethical behaviour across Thames Water. This might include helping to realign the probity limits, looking at fraud risk or redesigning our reporting dashboards or mandatory training.

What you will be doing as a Risk and Compliance Advisor

Monitor and report on the management of the organisation’s risks to internal and external stakeholders - You’ll contribute to the drafting and review of external reports on risk under the Corporate Governance Code (including the annual report pages) and other statutory or disclosable obligations, and assist in producing quarterly internal risk reporting and enhance the maturity of risk management within (and external to) Thames Water in line with our defined risk strategy​​​​​​.

Maintenance of risk governance arrangements, including governance, documentation, risk tolerance and appetite approach - You’ll help maintain a standardised approach to identify, assess and manage risks (threats and opportunities) and foster a ‘risk-aware’ culture that contributes to the achievement of effectively delivering our business plans and purpose.

Assist in improving the resilience of the organisation through the delivery and maintenance of business continuity processes - You’ll help in the delivery and continuous improvement of business continuity and crisis management plans, with a focus on testing and exercising to support quality assurance.

Contribute to maintaining the highest standards of ethical behaviour across
Thames Water -
You’ll assist in investigating any alleged instances of dishonest, criminal and unethical behaviour by employees or contractors and manage Thames Water’s recording and analysis of gifts and hospitality and any conflicts of interest.

What you should bring to the role

This is an entry-level position in the world of Risk and Compliance within the highly regulated water and waste sector. Whilst no formal experience is required you should have a strong interest in regulation, policy, risk, compliance or ethics. You’ll work with colleagues across the Risk and Compliance team to develop your understanding of what the team does and why it is important and we’ll help to train you as you develop your career.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport and influence stakeholders at different levels of an organisation.
  • Demonstrable ability to manage multiple work tasks simultaneously and deliver results within agreed deadlines.
  • A collaborative mindset, with a passion for driving impactful change in a complex environment.
  • The ability to understand, interpret and relay complex information.
