Job Description

Project Engineers – Wastewater Network Projects.

We’re looking for Project Engineers to join our London Infrastructure team and help transform and modernise our wastewater networks. You’ll be at the forefront of impactful projects — from preventing sewer flooding and reducing river spills to upgrading historic infrastructure that keeps London flowing. You’ll lead technical reviews, contribute to design discussions, and oversee projects from concept through to construction. Our work spans gravity sewers, rising mains, pumping stations, trunk sewer inspections, pollution reduction, and safeguarding assets that cross railways and bridges — offering you a diverse and meaningful engineering challenge every day.

What you’ll be doing
  • Working alongside a senior engineer, as well as our consultants and contractors, to oversee the development of several wastewater network projects from solution optioneering, the initial concept design and feasibility stage, to contract award.
  • Creating contractual project briefs and reviewing and collating pre-construction information.
  • Identifying, analysing, mitigating project risks and realising opportunities to enable scope definition and robust pricing by contractors.
  • Reviewing preconstruction surveys, drawings, and proposals from our contractors & raising concerns to your senior & lead engineers.
  • Assuring the detailed design is undertaken by contractors and any design changes during construction.
  • Be responsible for providing the Project Teams with the support they need during commissioning and asset handover.
  • Undertake design reviews, ensuring robust and safe solutions whilst meeting business and operational requirements.
  • Working with a senior engineer to act as the key contact for the role of CDM Designer or Principal Designer during the initial stages of design, as well as overseeing our contractors to ensure we are meeting our responsibilities as the client.
  • Delivering our zero-compromise health and safety attitude to all contractors working on your project.
This role is based on a hybrid basis at Maple Lodge Sewage Treatment works, office and site visits will be required up to 2-3 times a week.

36 hours a week.

We’re looking for you to:
  • Have a background in Civil Engineering and hold an engineering qualification or degree.
    • Formal qualifications within these sectors are strongly encouraged but not essential.
  • Be Incorporated or working towards Incorporated status with a relevant professional organisation.
    • Working towards other professional qualifications will also be considered.
  • Have the ability to coordinate with multiple stakeholders simultaneously. This includes internal colleagues, site employees and external contractors.
    • Experience working with Highways, Local Councils, & Network Rail would be highly advantageous but not essential.
  • Understanding of wastewater infrastructure projects (design & rehabilitation) in a variety of environments, including urban & environmentally sensitive areas.
    • Industry experience would be highly advantageous but not essential.
  • Understand the principles of project delivery in process industries.
  • Understand the decision of industrial processes in the Engineering discipline.
  • Understand Health & Safety in the Construction industry with specific reference to the CDM Regulation 2015.
  • Have a full, clean driving license. We go to a variety of sites to meet our contractors, complete design reviews, and undertake safety audits. Access to appropriate transportation is essential to the role.
What’s in it for you?

The team is at the heart of the delivery process taking projects from initial design right through to construction and commissioning. In the role, you will work with a wide range of people from across all of Thames Water and our contractors.
  • Competitive salary from £41,000 - £55,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience.
  • 26 days holiday per year increasing to 30 with the length of service. (plus, bank holidays)
  • Contributory pension – Defined Contribution - Maximum of 12% -2x employee contribution.
  • Personal Medical Assessments – Open to all once a year.
  • Performance-related pay plan directly linked to company performance measures and targets.
