Assistant Highways Operative – Road and Drainage Worker

This is an exciting temporary opportunity to work outdoors, delivering essential maintenance services in a dynamic environment.
Job Details:
- Employment Type: Temporary (4 weeks, covering long-term sickness)
- Start Date: 22/09/2025
- Hours: 37 hours per week
- Pay Rate: PAYE: £14.17 per hour | Umbrella: £17.81 per hour
- Location: Torfaen
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in highway maintenance, including laying and removing kerbing, block paviours, paving slabs, concrete, drainage pipes, and bituminous materials for footways and carriageways.
- Support the construction and removal of inspection chambers, walls, bollards, fencing, road signs, and bus shelter panels.
- Operate equipment such as compaction tools, road breakers, strimmers, mowers, and high-pressure jetting systems.
- Perform highway inspections, identifying defects, recording additional works, and reporting to supervisors.
- Cleanse and inspect road drainage gullies, clear blockages, and maintain electronic or manual records.
- Participate in winter maintenance tasks, including hand gritting, operating mini-gritters, and refilling grit bins.
- Deliver exceptional customer care, maintaining professionalism and distributing promotional materials as needed.
- Ensure all vehicles, plant, and equipment are used safely, maintained, and reported for defects.

Requirements:
- Essential: Strong communication, interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a customer-focused attitude.
- Essential: Ability to work effectively as part of a team and travel to meet job requirements.
- Desirable: HGV Class 2 licence, and 1+ years of experience in highway maintenance or drainage.
- Must have: Eligibility to work in the UK, Criminal Convictions Declaration, Confidentiality Agreement, 2 years of references/work history, and a valid driving licence.

- Work outdoors in all weather conditions, handling materials like concrete and bitumen with appropriate safety measures.
- Potential for out-of-hours duties, including winter maintenance standby.
